FAQ
What does "focolare" mean?
«Focolare» is an Italian word meaning «home», that warm corner of the house where the fire burns. This is what they called the first community that Chiara Lubich and her closest friends began to form in Trento (Italy).
Since then, the essence of the Focolare is to be like a family, radiating that warmth that unites. Its message, inspired by the Gospel, has been compared to a fire that warms hearts and illuminates minds.
Are the Focolare a religious movement?
Not exactly. The Focolare is a secular movement, although most of its members are believers. The beauty of it is that it is open to everyone, even people without religious affiliation.
What is the relationship between the Focolare and the Catholic Church?
The Movement arose within the Catholic Church and in 1962 received official recognition from the Holy See as an ecclesial movement. But it did not stop there: over the years, it spread to people of other Christian denominations, other religions and also to those who have no religious beliefs.
Do I have to be Christian or Catholic to be part of the Focolare?
Not at all! It is not necessary to be a Christian, Catholic or even a believer. The only thing that matters is sharing the values of the Movement: to love, to build fraternity and to work together for a more united world.
How old do I have to be to join?
There is room for everyone here, from children to adults. There are specific activities and groups depending on age, vocation and stage of life. For example, there are spaces for children, teenagers, young people, families, couples or professionals from different fields such as education, health or art.
There are also options for religious, priests and even bishops. At the Focolare, there is always a place for you.
What kind of activities are organized?
The Movement generates an authentic “culture of giving” and unity. Activities range from social projects to youth meetings, as well as local gatherings to share how to live the Word of Life .
A notable event is the Mariápolis , the traditional summer meeting that brings together people of all ages and cultures in an atmosphere of nature and fraternity.
What is the main objective of the Focolare?
Unity. The Focolare works for a real dialogue in several key areas: between believers and those without religious convictions, between believers of different religions, between Christians of different Churches, within the Catholic Church and with contemporary culture. The dream is to build bridges, overcome divisions and move forward together towards a more united world.
Where do you meet?
Meetings are usually held locally, in small groups. However, regional, national and international meetings are also organised.
What is a focolare?
Although the Focolare is used to refer to the entire movement, in the strict sense it refers to the focolarini, men and women, people consecrated to God who live in the focolare, a small community made up of men or women who are committed to living together the spirituality of the Movement.
Focolare groups are spread throughout the world and generally include people of various nationalities. Each Focolare group is also made up of married people who, although they live with their families, share the same spirit and mission.
Do I have to pay a fee or subscription to be part of the Focolare?
Not at all! Being part of the Movement does not imply membership fees or subscriptions. However, you can collaborate if you wish, for example, through initiatives such as the Igino Giordani Foundation or the New Families Association , both dedicated to promoting social projects and the values of the Movement.
You can also support the LAR magazine which promotes the culture of fraternity in dialogue with civil and religious society. Some more committed people choose to share goods freely and consciously in what we call "communion of goods."
