Sometimes the most important bridges aren't built with steel or concrete, but with encounters that transform perspectives. Seven Andalusian families have shared an experience of fraternity in Tangier, Tetouan, and Martil, strengthening ties forged two decades ago between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
Driven by an initiative of the New Families group of Jaén, seven families from Andalusia traveled to Morocco during the May 1st long weekend to get to know the Focolare community present in Tangier and the Focolare center of Martil.

Although it was the first time many of them had visited the neighboring country, the trip had deep roots. Some twenty years ago, young people from Granada and other Andalusian cities began forging friendships with young Muslims and adults in Tangier, inspired by the ideal of fraternity. Upon learning of this experience, Chiara Lubich encouraged them to build bridges of fraternity between the two shores of the Mediterranean..
During their stay, the group of families discovered the rich culture of Tangier and Tetouan and were able to participate in the life of the local Church. However, what impacted them most was their encounter with Muslim families who, for years, have also lived the spirit of unity. Sharing a simple Moroccan tea was enough to experience that cultural and religious differences do not prevent one from feeling part of the same family.
The visit continued in Martil, where the families learned about the life of the Focolare Center —inaugurated in February 2022 with the aim of developing a fraternal dialogue between Christians and Muslims— as well as the work carried out from the Lerchundi Center1 and the Our Lady of Morocco Women's Center2. There they were able to discover how dialogue, training and daily service become concrete paths to building a more fraternal society.
Those who participated returned with a profound sense of hope. The encounter helped to break down prejudices, renewed the desire to live the Gospel in everyday life, and confirmed that fraternity is possible when we take the first step toward others.
The journey has ended, but the bridge remains open. In the hearts of those who participated, the desire to forge connections between people, cultures, and nations continues to resonate, convinced that every sincere encounter can bring the two shores of the Mediterranean a little closer together.
