Hagia Sophia: The Making of a Symbol (online)

June 20, 2024, 7:30 PM - 21:00

Lecturer: Antonio Sotillo, architect.

We are offered a journey from the conception to the inauguration of this emblematic work of Byzantine culture of the 6th century in the magnificent Constantinople, today Istanbul: the Hagia Sophia.

From an architectural and historiographical perspective, Antonio Sotillo will tell us about the conditions of its emergence, the construction process, and its moment of greatest splendor; all of this influenced by the strong and inescapable socioeconomic, political, and religious influences of the time. This is a fascinating journey through the permanence of a symbol that continues to leave its mark on the collective consciousness of these peoples and nearby religious traditions; a symbol that somehow connects and unites us even today on this side of the Mediterranean.
